Kazakhstan brought half of a dying sea back to life
The Aral Sea was once the world’s fourth-largest lake. Soviet irrigation drained it into a desert, but a dam built by Kazakhstan in 2005 revived its northern part, and the fish came back.
From the 1960s, Soviet planners diverted the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers to grow cotton and other crops, and the Aral Sea shrank catastrophically. By 2014 its eastern basin had dried out completely, leaving the Aralkum desert. But in 2005 Kazakhstan completed the Kokaral dam, separating the North Aral. Its water level rose, salinity fell, and commercial fishing returned.
